About HDHR
Research and
Documentation
HDHR’s Research and Documentation program generates valuable data and insights that contribute to the broader field of archaeology and cultural resource management. We’re ensuring that knowledge associated with repatriated items is preserved and shared responsibly.

Building an Understanding of Collector Mentalities
Understanding what motivates people to collect artifacts is a critical knowledge gap in the race to preserve sites. Removing artifacts from archaeological sites reduces the scientific integrity of sites and is disrespectful to tribal communities, yet it remains an activity pursued by some outdoor recreationalists. Collectors often understand the act of collecting artifacts to be saving artifacts, and honoring the deceased people who made them.
Learning why outdoor recreationalists remove artifacts from sites can help us find ways to effectively and respectfully communicate a message of stewardship that respects tribal communities and preserves archaeological information.
Case Management and Tracking
Each case contributes to the development of internal and public-facing case studies that document processes, challenges, and outcomes. HDHR also tracks data on repatriation activities, including case volume, timelines, and partnership development, to improve operations and demonstrate impact.
Where appropriate, HDHR contributes to broader archaeological discourse by sharing findings, methodologies, and lessons learned. This work helps establish best practices for voluntary repatriation and positions HDHR as a leader in an emerging area of cultural heritage work.
