Our Programs

How We Use Archaeology to
Improve Our World

HDHR works across five interconnected programs to support Tribes, collectors, and communities in the important work of repatriation. Our approach centers people to find the best outcomes for artifacts and sacred items from private collections.

Repatriation

HDHR provides a clear, confidential, and non-judgmental process for individuals and organizations seeking to return Native American cultural items to tribes. Every case is handled with professionalism and respect.

Tribal Collaboration

HDHR engages Tribal Nations to ensure they retain authority over their cultural items. Tribal guidance shapes decisions regarding the care and return of artifacts and sacred items.

Public Outreach

Through education and outreach, HDHR brings together knowledge of archaeology, tribal voices, and recreation on public lands to support artifact repatriation and responsible recreation.

Collector Engagement

Gaining the confidence of collectors is an important component of our work. Our collector engagement program seeks out members of this community, builds trust, and supports collectors through the process of offering their collections for repatriation.

Research

HDHR conducts care documentation and provenance research on every item to understand the origin, context, and potential cultural significance of each item.
